Creating my front cover

creating my front cover, I'm not doing what i had planned to do. My masthead hasn't gone to plan, neithers my photos nor the stories inside. So when i come to do the real thing it will be how i want it and how the audience wants it.

Institutions

I have done some more research into my Institutions and I have come across IPC Media. My magazine is targeted at people who like R&B and the classic side to it. My age range is 16/17 + and people 20+ the people who lived throughout the 90's etc, the ones who were brought up listening to this genre of music. Its targeted at all mixed ethnicity's; global.
My magazine is going to be a subscription online, where IPC Media is a perfect choice as it does subscribe magazine. I also have facebook and twitter links for my magazine due to my age range being 16/17 + people are all updated with the newest smart phones and digital technology. So on their smart phones and tablets and computers they might rather subscribe to the magazine rather than buy it from shops. They may also want to join the social network pages as everyone these days are now on facebook or twitter so when they subscribe they can see all the newest updates with the magazine. I'm also going to have an itunes and android app so people can also download the magazine as an app instead of going out and buying the magazine. It will be available to everyone, and they can get it as easy as downloading an app. For the older audience they may prefer buying the magazine and reading it by hand rather than downloading it as the older generation of people may not have the newest technology and not know how to use the app store or android's. So the magazine will also be available at local supermarkets such a as Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons and Waitrose for the wealthier people. It shall also be available at newsagents on the shelf will all the other music magazines.
IPC Media would be the perfect choice because although they don't distribute many music magazines, which is a good thing because mine wouldn't be amongst any that may be in competition, however they do distribute magazines such as Now, which isn't a music magazine but its a magazine that does include plenty of R&B artists with their latest gossip, this is the magazine that may include some of the same celebrities but instead of lifestyle gossip it will have their music side of the gossip.

IPC Media

I am not using IPC Media to publish my magazine because once again its not my music genre. The magazine they do publish is NME and although they do occasionally publish magazines that have some R&B articles in, its not the right category for me. It's a lot more indie and rock etc... to the music magazine I'm creating.

Bauer Media

I am not choosing Bauer Media to publish my magazine due to the fact that the magazines they do publish are no where near the same kind of style or genre that mine is. They're a completely different category in the music industry.

R&B magazine subscription

This is a link to an existing R&B magazine, you cant buy it on the shelves you can only subscribe to it and I've been getting a lot of inspiration from this magazine as there is actually no magazines out there on shelves like mine.

Photo shoot eye make up ideas

This is what i want my female models to do their eye makeup like because its stands out and looks flirty and sexy, also looking on existing r&b magazines this is what the models have their eye makeup like.

Another photoshoot

I need to do another photo shoot this week because the images i have taken are not varied enough, i need many different people in lots of different outfits, i need enthusiastic people who dont mind getting their photo taken and are confident behind the camera. I need males and females and im going to make another plan and use my mood board even more.

Selection and Rejection

Flickr

I have just created a Flickr account and all my photos from my photoshoot have been uploaded

Photoshoot Hiccup

Ive had a slight hiccup involving the photoshoot. The people who i had originally asked to do my photoshoot agreed to it, however when i tried to get a time and date sorted they didnt get back to me, so at last minuite i had to change my model. Over a period of the previous weekend i had to get another model, luckily i got one and Becka Dyer in my media agreed to do it for me so monday dinner time i managed to get my photoshoot done for today.

Bling in masthead

This is the image of bling i used in my masthead and side story on my front cover and the contents title. I do this on Adobe Photoshop Elements 11.
I do this by highlighting all the letters i want the bling to be placed into, i then press edit at the top of the screen and select 'paste into selection'. I then had a masthead full of bling and then i wen on effect at the bottom right of the screen and added the embossed edging around the outline.

Development of the masthead

When I came up with my masthead and decided how I wanted to do my R&B masthead i then needed to decide the colour and font style of the 'classics'. I decided to go with the bottom one. The first one blended into the background and had too much of a traditional font. The second one also blended in to much with the background but i liked the blue as it is the same colour as Harry's eye colour on the DPS. The font is more modern as it is a classic R&B magazine with a modern twist.

Idea for contents page and DPS

I was thinking of having one of my models doing this pose for either my contents page or my DPS. It takes up a lot of the page and is a different and sexy, seductive and flirty image. The model looks confident and is making eye contact with the camera which is also known as a mode of address.

Photo shoot

For my photo shoot, tonight I'm going to get in touch with all my models and see if they'll be able to be models for me tomorrow dinner.
Im also being a friends model for her magazine tomorrow too so it will be busy. I hope they'll be able to come tomorrow so i have images ready for tuesday's media lesson when i go onto Adobe Elements 11 and start the creation of my magazine.

An idea for my main article

I have just decided that my main story on my magazine front cover will be an EXCLUSIVE story. The word might catch the audiences attention because its exclusive, not just any ordinary main story on a magazine.

R&B mast head ideas

For the R&B in my masthead i was thinking of making it big, sparkly, and silver. It looks glamorous and will really stand out on the black background on the front cover of my magazine. It looks musical, fits in with the genre, its made up of lights and shiny objects which is a connotation of stars and fame.

Masthead font

I saw this written R&B logo and i love the font! I was thinking of maybe using this font for the 'classic' above or underneath the R&B because its sans serif, fun, looks handwritten and not too modern.

My mood board

I decided to create a hand made mood board to get some ideas for my magazine. I prefer being creative than on the computer all the time so i decided to do something creative. On this mood board i have lots of artists form the 90's in the R&B industry, this is giving me ideas on poses, expressions, clothes and outfits, make ip and how to do hair. I also have a lot of different mastheads to give myself ideas on fonts, colours and different mastheads for different genres. I have also added a handful of various different existing R&B music magazines to get some ideas on the layout and colours and styles of the magazines already on the shelves.
I'm going to use this mood board for when i make the front cover of my magazine but its going to be mainly used on my photo shoots. The images I have collected are going to be my inspiration on how how to model my models. I'm not going to copy them exactly but they will give me some ideas on how the makeup was back in the 90's for the R&B genre and how i need to do the models hair but most importantly their expressions and poses. I need to get them right to link with the genre. I cant have a model looking like an R&B artist from the 90's but then ruining the look by having them pose with a aggression as if to say they was going in Hammer. It just wouldn't work, so i need to get it all perfect and this mood board should hopefully help me.

Masthead brainstorm

During my target audience analysis on Prezie i came across a new masthead to call my magazine!
My genre is R&B back in the 90's so i had been playing around with names to do with the 90's and R&B. Then i can across the word classic. I had a brain storm and decided to call it Classic R&B and wrote down my ideas. The 'R&B' is going to be big and bold and stand out on the page. Then the classic is going to be in either a classical font or a modern one and it will be above the R&B.

What im doing with target audience feedback and Prezi

I have recently handed out 20 target audience surveys, and got them all filled in.
I am currently doing a Prezie presentation to analysis all the feedback i got. Doing the Prezie presentation is a bit difficult as it is the first time i have ever used it (or heard of it for that matter) so I'm finding it a little difficult to get the hang of it as its a bit more complex than powerpoint which I'm more comfortable using.

1st DPS Analysis

My magazine idea and target audience

The genre of my magazine is going to be 90's R&B. I have chosen this genre because i haven't seen a magazine on the shelves quite like this one.
I have a few ideas on what to call my magazine but I'm not quite sure which one. I am going to take my name ideas and create a wordle.
The name ideas i have are:

- 90's R&B
- Back to the 90's
- Back 2 the 90's (with the number 2 backwards)
- R&Back
- Old Skool

My target audience is going to be males and females, mainly females will be attracted to the magazine i think though. The target age group i have chosen is around my age, 17 and above, and also the older generation who lived through the 90's, like 20+. So i have a wide target audience range to meet to, which is going to be difficult but I'm sure i can do it.
I have been influenced by the magazines 'vibe' 'rnb' 'flavour' and 'billboard'.
My colour scheme and possible housestyle will be black and white with 1 or 2 other bright colours to make more important things stand out.
I will issue the magazine as monthly. I will do this because then i have a lot more to talk about of what has gone on in the past month music wise and the issue will be of good quality.
For my photo shoots i shall have 1 main image on my front cover, maybe a couple of images on my contents page and another main image or two for my DPS.

Image analysis on front cover of rnb mag

I love the image on this magazine. Its got no colour to it and got no lighting in it at all. The props work so well in the dark though, the gold chain and the gold ring and the gold sides on his shades have all been made to stand out and add colour to the image. The gold is also a conventional code telling the audience that he has money, is confident to wear these, is rather bad but not too bad, you wouldn't see anyone on the front of a pop magazine wearing all gold chains and rings and being dressed in black with a hat and shades on. So the props give away the genre, so the targeted audience will know straight away what magazine it is. He also has tattoos, more than 1, which shows the representation that he's a masculine male, he likes to dress nice and look good and wear all designer, expensive stuff that stands out in peoples faces, but he doesn't overdo it, he still has the big build body and tattoos which shows of his masculinity side. The pose adds to this, his arms crossed, hand over mouth, the head tilt just tops it off and shows that he is confident, strong, not aggressive but arrogant.

RnB masthead Analysis

This is a masthead from a music magazine called 'R&B'. You can tell straight away from the masthead what the genre of music is. I love this font because its looks handwritten, like a lot of songs that RnB singers sing, it looks like its being written fast, fast like the rap songs RnB rappers rap. The use of the letter 'n' is conventional, its a shorter way of saying 'and' because when you say and really fast it sounds like 'n'. This is the house style for all of the RnB magazines, they use the same masthead and place it in the same position in he top left hand corner of every issue the magazine makes. The only thing that changes is the colour, depending on the background or what the main story of the magazine is. It varies from blue, to white, to yellow, to orange and many more. Im thinking of making my masthead in the same way that this one is, because i really like the font.

Front Cover Analysis for Classic rock magazine

This is the front cover magazine for Classic Rock. As you can see, the masthead of this magazine is in the back ground, you cant see it as Slash in the main image is covering it with his hat. Although the masthead isn't very visible, you are still able to now what this magazine is and also what genre it is. The masthead is big, bold, and white which stands out on the dark black background. Its written in serif font and is all capitalised.
The colours used on this front cover of the magazine are very dark. They mainly use black, as its rock. If they'd of used brighter colours and a lot more light you might not be able to tell that it was a Rock magazine. There is the yellow also used in some of the buzz words such as 'revealed' and 'buh-bye' and the sticker on the right hand side making an article inside the magazine stand out to attract the audiences attention that that particular article. The use of yellow stands out on the back ground and stand out even more than what the white fonts do.
The main image is a medium close up of Slash. The convention of this image to make you know that he is part of the same genre as the magazine is the representation of him. The hair, the props, the colours, the outfit, the pose and expression on his face. He's smoking, giving of the stereotypical impression that he's bad, he's harsh, people involved in this kind of genre do drugs and smoke and are bad and aggressive. Not the kind of person you'd see on the front cover of a pop magazine for example. His pose and his expression is expressionless. He has the shades on to cover his eyes, his hair is all big and curly and frizzy and in his face. He has piercings as you can see on his nose, the chains around his neck. He's not a young man, he's middle aged which links into the 'classic' rock.
The target audience for this particular magazine i would say would be for the older people, maybe when they was younger and this genre of music was the big thing and also some younger people will be targeted at this audience to as they might like this genre as well. Younger children wont be targeted at this magazine because it wont appeal to them; all the dark colours and smoking and aggressiveness. They'd want more colours and cleanliness and happy smiling celebrities on the front cover, preferably not smoking.
The main headline is big bold and yet again white linking into the masthead. Serif font still but this times it's not all capitalised.
The only thing that doesn't work for me on this magazine is the 'free cd!' sticker in the corner, its red and white which stands out but looks out of place, that sticker could be put on any magazine, it doesn't link up the rock genre.

Front Cover Magazine Analysis

The banner on the front cover of the Top of the Pops magazine is in a text that stands out on a coloured background. The target audience for this magazine is young teens preferably ages around 13. So the bright colours will catch their attention and want to know what its about. Its all about One Direction so the fact its in big bold fonts and its colourful; it will make them want to buy the magazine and see what its about. They use a puff to substitute the word 'love' with an icon. In this case the love heart. Its semiotics, the connotation of the love heart is that it means love and its a world wide connotation, everybody who sees a love heart used in this way will understand the meaning of the icon, meaning love! The colours used are all bright bold and stand out, the hot pink and sunshine yellow and the bold bright blue, this will draw in the target audience because bright colours attract the younger audience, if they were to use darker colours and less colours it would be targeted at an older audience and the younger audience wont be as appealed to the magazine. At the bottom of the banner is a film strip, the film strip links up up to the words in the banner, the banner is telling the audience that One Direction are making a film so the film strip links up that.

The masthead of the front cover of the magazine is also in a banner. Its all bright pink, stands out on the page in the top left hand corner, this is also a house style. On every magazine that top of the pops makes, they always put the masthead in the same position. The font is in san- serif, all in capital letters, all white, they put the 'of the' in a white circle and make the font pink instead of white like the rest of the other fonts, this contrasts the colours used. They use images of stars around the inside edge of the banner, this is called iconography. It appeals to the younger audience and also has connotations, the stars could represent the stars they use in the magazine.

My own contents page

Contents Page:
If i'd of gone ahead with the contents page for my college magazine id have made the word 'contents' bold and colourful. I'd of written the contents of my magazine in bold writing, all linked with images of the other stories. The main story of the magazine would of stood out above all the other stories, with bigger images and would have been a different colour to catch the audiences attention.

College magazine front cover

                                                           Front Cover:
My front cover of my Collage Magazine. This was my first time making a front cover of a magazine. I created this using Adobe Photoshop Elements 11, it was also my first time using Adobe. On the front cover i have used a masthead, which is the title of this magazine in this case 'In House'. I used a big, bold and colourful font so i know that it'll stand out above the image. I also added the release date of the magazine and the issue number. There is a main story on the front cover which i used another font for; keeping the colour scheme the same as the masthead. The front cover is very plain and simple. Using only two colours and a medium close-up of a Sixth Form College student. I'm fairly pleased with this front cover as it is the first one i've ever made but when i make the front cover for my Music Magazine i shall make it a lot more busy and, a lot more colours to attract students attention, more main stories to draw the audience in and with the image, it'll make it more clear, as you can see on the photo there is a fair few blemishes and redness, i did try to use the spot healing brush on Adobe Photoshop but as you can see i only made it look worse, so on my next magazine i'll try to work on that more so i don't get any redness in the image. Many improvements need to be made but as this was my first front cover of a magazine i don't think i did too bad.
